Can you recycle old food? Keara Yee, age 8

Hi Keara

Yes it is possible to recycle old food - by turning it into compost. We often say that composting is nature's way of recycling and its something that we can all do at home - or in school!

Can cooked food waste from the school canteen be composted at school? Marion – Volunteer Grandma

Dear Marion, yes it’s possible to compost cooked food waste at school but you will need a special type of compost bin such as a ‘Hotbin’. You can find out more information about the Hotbin and other types of compost bins here. And if you need help with using Hotbins or any compost system contact Suffolk Master Composters (mastercomposters@suffolk.gov.uk) for more advice or a school visit!

How much trash is in the ocean? Iaila, Age 8

Hi Iaila, we can’t be completely sure how much ends up in the ocean however it is estimated that at least 8 million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean each year. That’s over one lorry load every minute! So it is very important to recycle plastic items (if you can!) or at least put them in a bin rather than littering.
